Peru Weather

Unlike other countries near the equator, Peru does not have an exclusively tropical climate; the influence of both the Andes Mountains and the cool waters of the Humboldt Current cause great climatic diversity within the country. Along the coast of Peru the temperatures are moderate and there is low precipitation, along with high humidity. The exception is in the northern part of the country which is typically warmer and wetter. In the Andes, rain is frequent during summer, and temperature and humidity diminish with altitude up to the frozen peaks of the Andes. The Amazon Region or "La Selva" is characterized by heavy rainfall and high temperatures, except for its southernmost part, which has cold winters and seasonal rainfall.

Coastal Peru Travel

When you travel along Peru's 1500 miles of coastline you'll find a diverse area of culture, history, natural beauty and wonders. To the north near the Ecuador boarder you'll find the dry desert and beach towns of Piura and Mancora a favorite destination for surfers world wide. Continuing towards the capital city of Lima you'll pass through Trujillo the center of both the Moche and Chimu Cultures nearby you'll find Chan Chan the largest adobe city named a UNESCO world heritage site in 1986.  The nearby Temple of the Moon was colorfully painted some 2000 years ago by the Moche and the original artwork remains as vibrant today as it was thousands of years ago.

Traveling south of Lima along the coast the area is best known for its dry deserts, and impressive sand dunes. An oasis in the desert, Ica us the production capital of Pisco, Peru's national drink as well as Huacachina, the sand boarding and dune buggy capital of Peru.

The desert near Ica is one of the driest places in the world with little wind, the dry conditions of the Nazca Plateau has made it possible for mysterious Lines of Nazca to remain intact for some 1500 years. As you continue south you'll come to the white city of Arequipa where you can visit the Incan Terraces or Colca Canyon to commercial city of Tacna near the Chilean border.
